NEW MEMBER AUDITION POLICY
The Park Ridge Chorale is always seeking to renew and upgrade it’s membership base through the inclusion of talented new members with prior vocal or choral experience. Membership auditions are open to all.
The Chorale holds auditions for new members (and re-auditions former members who have not sung with the group in over a year) on the first 2 Monday nights of each concert rehearsal period. Prospective members are usually asked to participate in the rehearsal, and audition at the end of the evening. Auditions are heard by the Music Director and members of the Chorale’s board. An accompanist is provided.
The audition consists of three parts:
1. A 90-second segment of a piece of your choosing. It is preferable that you sing with piano and bring sheet music in the proper key. If you do not have music, the pianist may be able to play your song by ear (or change the key), but this is not guaranteed. Singing without accompaniment should only be done as a last resort, or with a piece that is designed to be sung a-cappella. Being an ensemble, we are interested in your ability to collaborate with the pianist. You may either start at the beginning or in the middle of the piece; whichever option ensures that you include the best part of your performance in the 90-second time frame.
2. You will be asked to sing a few bars from one of the choral pieces that had been rehearsed earlier in the evening. It is important to us that new members either have some music-reading skills or a good ear that allows them to learn music quickly.
3. If the Music Director feels that your selection did not show sufficient vocal range, you may be asked to sing a few scales.
At the end of your audition, your membership will be considered, and you will be contacted by phone or email within a couple of days. Your section assignment will also be considered.
The Park Ridge Chorale is a volunteer organization, and we sing for pleasure, but it is important to us to produce a quality musical product. As such, we take a serious and rather professional approach to our music-making.
At this point, or membership stands at 45-55 voices. This is close to the optimum number of singers for the size of our stage and performance space. For this reason, we are currently only accepting singers who possess a relatively high level of vocal and musical skill.
We are also hopefully moving closer to the ideal of having 4 sections of relatively equal size. At this point, the number of women in the Chorale is more than twice the number of men. For this reason, we are setting the bar a bit higher for new sopranos and altos, although we are happy to accept a skilled singer in any section.
